I've been talking with Ami from Lakes Yarn & Fiber about a new design and I am really looking forward to working with her. Ami sent three skeins of her Hayden Worsted in Hansa which is the dark pink, Sweet Clover which is the medium pink and a lighter pink which I think may be called Repeatable Pink. They coordinate perfectly with one another and it's going to be so much fun to design a new pattern with them!
I've been able to sneak a bit of spinning in here and there on the weekends and finished up one fleece of alpaca. It's a 2 ply fingering weight and approximately 560 yards. It's not my best spinning, but it will knit up nicely and I think it's going to be a shawl.
I also spun up a lovely batt from Knit Spin Farm. The colorway is Violets at my Feet and it has all sort of fun things in it like Angelian, Blue Faced Leicester, and Sari Silk to name just a few. It's leaning towards an Aran weight and should make a nice hat or cowl. It was a blast to spin and should be at least as much fun to knit!
My friend Yvonne sent me a lovely care package a couple of weeks ago. It had a few goodies for Iggy and a very special treat for me. It's a skein of Red Barn Yarn's Sock Sparkle in the Lavendar Fields colorway. It's a blend of merino, silk and nylon, and the silk is very noticeable. Socks or a shawl? It's going to be a hard choice!

Babalicious
I first discovered the wonderful yarns of Miss Babs at Maryland Sheep & Wool a few years ago. I couldn't believe all of the stunning colors her yarns come in and was even more impressed with the ladies that were working in the booth. Since that first visit to her booth, every time I have been back no matter how crowded it is, or if it's at the end of the day, the ladies are always so nice and super helpful. I've followed along on some of the podcasts and interviews that featured Babs and was very impressed with her business sense and the way that she explained how everyone sees colors differently. Last year I was fortunate to get to meet Babs while we were at MDSW. Babs is a lady who is as vibrant as the yarn that she dyes and was an absolute pleasure to talk to. She is one of those people that make you feel warm and welcome the moment you meet them.
I really enjoy knitting with the yarns that I have gotten from Miss Babs. Each one is a work of art and when I knit with them, it's like getting to paint a watercolor picture without the trouble of having to use paint (I'm a bit challenged with actual paints).
I thought it was very appropriate to name this pattern set after Babs and her wonderful yarns!
Babalicious is a three piece set that includes mitts, a cowl and boot toppers that can all be made from just one skein of Miss Babs Yowza! This fun set was inspired by Miss Babs herself; her likableness and charm come out in the beautiful yarns that she dyes. I thought it was very fitting to name this pattern after her. The three piece set is introductory priced at $5.99 on Ravelry.

Progress
I'm making progress for my goal of using 10 skeins of yarn before MDSW and have finished one Hearts in Owlantis sock.
I know a lot of knitters who are cold sheeping and not purchasing any yarn until they have knitted down some of their stash. While I am trying to stick to the goal of 10 skeins, I'm not restricting myself from purchasing more yarn if I see something that I fall in love with. Like this skein from Knitted Wit that fell into my Etsy cart:
It's pretty close to a Tardis blue and is even prettier in person - it has a lot more depth of color and is quite stunning. What can I say? I had to have it!
If you are cold sheeping and trying to get your stash down to a reasonable amount of yarn, a good way to do it is to go through your patterns and prioritize them. Look and see which patterns you really want to knit and then pick the yarn to go with the pattern (if you bought the yarn specifically for the pattern already, then you are one step ahead of the game!). Put both the yarn and pattern in a project or zip lock bag so that it's ready to go when you decide to cast on. Give yourself a reward every time you finish a project that included stashing down. It can be something small and simple like a special candy bar or a nice glass of wine.
If you don't have a pattern in mind for some of the yarn you have, check out Ravelry's search feature. Enter the type of yarn you have, then check out the suggested patterns for it and completed projects. There are some great ideas to be had there! If you have some left over fingering weight yarns, Stash Bash and Camberwell are both great projects to use up those left overs:

New Pattern Coming on Monday, KAL Updates and Other Fun Stuff!
Game of Thrones Season 4 has come to a close and if you are like me, the withdrawals have already started. It's the only show on tv that I find so completely enthralling that I don't knit while watching it. A year is just too long to wait for next season!
After Mother of Dragons was released, Miss Babs and I have been collaborating to create a series of Game of Thrones themed patterns. I have been having a hard time containing my excitement and not letting the Direwolf out of the bag! There will be two more patterns coming out this year and the next one is being released on Monday June 30 and will be available in my Ravelry Pattern Shop. The third in the series will be coming out later in the fall so you will have plenty of time to get this one knitted up before the next release!
Night's Watch is a effortless one skein garter stitch triangle shawlette in Miss Babs Yummy 2-Ply in the Coffee Break colorway. I have included both charted and written instructions and the pattern is easy to memorize which makes this a perfect knit night project. I've included some fun Game of Thrones graphics and a few other surprises in the pattern layout that I hope you will enjoy.
For a chance to win a copy of Night's Watch "like" the Lara Smoot Designs Facebook Page and share the Night's Watch post on Facebook. The drawing will be on June 30 in conjunction with the pattern release.
The Summer of Socks KAL is in full swing with lot's of lovely projects popping up. Be sure to pop on over to the KAL thread and check out all the socks! A huge thank you to SuchGwenderfulStuff on Etsy for sponsoring the Summer of Socks KAL with a set of stitch markers from her shop. I absolutely love her stitch markers. They are thinner then some of the other brands that I have used the past and the colors show up well in my knitting. The winner with have their choice of a set of markers in Gwen's shop.
The Mother of Dragons KAL is ending on July 1. If you haven't posted your finished Mother of Dragons in the thread be sure to do so before July 1 to qualify for a chance to win a skein of Miss Babs Yummy 2-Ply in Biker Chick or your choice of one of my patterns.

An Interview, Powhatan's Festival of Fiber and Spark KAL with Bare Naked Wools!
Last month Robin Hunter contacted me to see if I would be interested in participating in an interview for her blog. There are a few blogs that I try to read on a regular basis and hers is one of them. She always has interesting information and I enjoy reading the interviews she does with other designers.
Robin posted the interview today. I'm really honored that she asked me! She asks a lot of good questions and if you were wondering more about me and my business, please check out her post: An Interview with Lara Smoot
For the past few weeks I have been getting ready for the Powhatan's Festival of Fiber. I've put together some "Ready to Knit" kits with a few of my patterns. These kits include the yarn, pattern and a stitch marker. All you will need are your needles to get started!
Frost in Bloom
Oktoberfest
Iridill

Ferry Beach

I will also be bringing some Mother of Dragons kits. They include a Limited Edition dragon project bag, Mother of Dragons pattern and coordinating yarn. This is just a little hint of the bag as I am putting the final touches on them:

I will be adding some project bags and kit's to my Etsy shop around the first week of May. I am really excited to be starting this new venture!
Speaking of excitement, the Spark KAL has been announced in the Bare Naked Wools group on Ravelry. We would love to have you join us. It begins on April 30 and Erica and I have some fun things planned for the KAL including a few contests along the way. If you are looking for something to knit for your Mom for Mothers Day, Spark is a perfect gift. Mom can wear it in the chilly spring air when she goes out for her morning walk, or in the evenings since the nights are still a bit chilly. Ok, who am I trying to kid here? When I spoke with Erica earlier this week she had 2" of snow at her house! It's definitely a late spring and Mom would sure appreciate a nice hand knitted Spark cowl to keep her warm. Check out these pictures from the look book photo shoot. Beth knitted the lighter colored Spark using all Bare Naked Confection and I knitted the darker one in Confection with Indieways Best Worsted for the contrast.

A Weekend of Peace and Tranquility
Andy and I have been so busy this summer that time had flown by. It seems that every moment has been filled with projects around the house. We have gotten so much done and it's a great feeling. Between our jobs, working around the house and helping a friend move we really hadn't taken any time just for us. We decided to take a long weekend and head to Yorktown. After doing a little bit of searching around I found The Hornsby House Inn.
Photo from The Hornsby House Inn website
We arrived at The Hornsby House early Saturday afternoon and were given a warm welcome by David who is one of the owners. He gave us a tour of the house which included a bit of family history and history of the area. We stayed in the Magnolia Room which was like a bit of stepping back in time. Decorated with a reproduction iron bed, antique sewing machine and beautiful glassware that had been in the house for several generations we felt right at home.

Our first night there we decided to partake in the wine and cheese that is served at 5:00. I'm so glad we did! We wound up meeting a lovely group of people who were having their class reunion from 1963. We had a great time getting to know them. You can read a little bit more about their reunion on John Warleys blog. He has written a few books and after enjoying his stories in person, I've added Bethesda's Child to my reading list.
Breakfast was fantastic both days. Everything was made there and we had so many things to choose from! There was fresh fruit, coffee, orange juice, cheesy grits casserole, eggs, and on Monday we had Eggs Benedict which is one of my most favorite things in the world!
Of course we made it to the Yorktown Pub at least once each day. They have fantastic fried scallops and ice cold beer on tap. It rained most of Sunday afternoon and we wound up staying at the Pub and enjoying the view of the York River.
We did manage to take a walk on the beach in between rain showers. I spotted this unusual looking seaweed and thought it would be an interesting picture. I love the reddish orange color against the paler grainy looking sand.
We had a quick photo shoot for the Oktoberfest Cowl and Walk The Line Socks. I'll have pictures ready to post next time as this is getting a bit long. I do have a quick progress picture of the patio which is very near completion! We have started filling in and leveling the interior and are hoping to have it done by Labor Day.
