Birthday Specials!

There have been a couple of birthdays over the years that were a bit of struggle for me.  When I turned forty, I didn't even want anyone to acknowledge it. I don't know exactly why, since getting older means you have (hopefully, anyway) gained some knowledge, maybe learned a new skill and as a bonus you are closer to getting a senior discount at Kroger on Tuesdays.  I decided a few years ago, that I wasn't going to go down without a fight.  I started adding a new and improved skin regimen (I never even used to remove my makeup at night or wear sunscreen) and recently have had the naturally occurring after a certain age platinum blonde hairs enhanced to a better shade of highlight.  I changed some of my eating habits (Who is going to give up cupcakes? That would just be crazy talk.) and overall I feel a lot better.  My grandmother, who recently turned 97, had the best advice of all: keep your mind young and you will always feel young no matter what your age.

To celebrate my birthday, I'm having a few giveaways and a coupon for my pattern shop on Ravelry.  Use coupon code: Cupcake for 25% off all single patterns until November 17th.

I somehow wound up purchasing two copies of The Harmony Guides: Knit Edgings & Trims, in the same order from Interweave.  That means I have a copy to give away!  It does not mean that was a senior moment.  Really, it wasn't.

I also had two skeins of this Yummy Sock Yarn in my stash and would like to share one along with a copy of my Mirrored Step pattern.

For a chance to win please enter a comment and share your best birthday memory.  I'll draw for the winners by random number generator next Monday, November 18th.

  1. My best birthday memories are actually both my children's 21st birthdays! Other than the joy of seeing them grow up to be productive, caring adults, on my daughter's 21st birthday I adopted my latest kitten, and on my son's 21st birthday I graduated (finally!) from college!

Happy birthday to you - and congrats on coming to terms with it. We can't help getting older, we can help what we do about it! Me, I'm determined to be the coolest old lady ever. Or at least to be so eccentric that everyone just rolls their eyes and lets me do my own thing. :)

  2. I always enjoyed making special cakes for my boys' birthdays when they were young, and it strained my brain intensely, since each one had to be different. Fun. But my best birthday memory was when my whole extended family surprised me with a family party on my own birthday several years ago. That's four generations, and having them all come together just for me made me feel awfully special.

Age is just a number, and living longer is a precious gift.

  3. My most memorable birthday was the one where my water broke when I was pregnant with my third son! He took two more days to make his appearance but the thought that he was on his way made it a birthday I will never forget.

  4. Since I semi-retired from teaching, I let my hair go grey. I figured if it looked really bad, one trip to the beautician would fix it. On year when I was studying at the University of New Hampshire, my friends put a paper hill outside my door. When I walked out of my room, I stepped over the hill! I thought it was creative.

  5. My best birthday so far was #50. Celebrated at the beach (in February!), and it even snowed for a brief moment. The kids and I did a "polar plunge" in the Atlantic and my husband bought me diamond earrings!!!

  6. How typically generous of you Lara. My best birthday was when I turned 13 and we hired a sports hall, stuck a record player in the corner of the room and had a roller-disco. Friends still talk about that party!

  9. Happy birthday to you! I think my best birthday was when I was 30. We had a fondue party and invited close friends to come and celebrate. It was a fun, social evening.
